Monaghan RehabCare Hosts Welcome Evening
Wednesday, 23rd July 2008: The RehabCare centre on the Mall Road in Tirkeenan hosted a welcome evening on Tuesday, 22nd July for families and friends of the people who use its services, as well as the local community.
The evening began with the building being blessed by Rev. Margaret Pringle and Fr. Patrick McGinn. Then visitors were given a tour of the centre and treated to an Irish dancing and song performance. There was also the opportunity to view an arts and crafts exhibition which showcased the work of the talented artists.
Information and guidance was provided on the many programmes offered at RehabCare in Monaghan including “Literacy and Numeracy”, “Healthy Lifestyles and Exercise”, “Independent Living Skills”, “Computers”, “Community Integration”, and “Workability” which prepares and supports people in local employment.
Anne McFarland, Community Services Manager for RehabCare in Monaghan, said, “We are delighted to host this welcome evening, and to have the opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones from the local community. Everyone using the centre has worked really hard and the projects on display and the music performances show their considerable achievements.”
RehabCare is currently undergoing a drive to seek part-time jobs for people from the centre and employers are invited to get in touch to find out about the benefits to them. Currently nine people are employed locally in a range of organisations including the Hillgrove Hotel, Monaghan Leisure Centre, Supervalu, Centra, Pattons, the Squealing Pig and Monaghan Presbyterian Church. Other businesses in the area also support RehabCare by providing work experience placements.
In partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE), RehabCare provides a range of high-quality person-centred services in Monaghan. These include the resource centre in the Mall Road which provides programmes such as independent living, community participation, social and leisure activities, personal development and education to 43 people with disabilities. There is also a home support service called Carelink and a supported accommodation service.
RehabCare, the health and social care division of the Rehab Group, operates a wide variety of services which reach into communities the length and breadth of Ireland. Each year, some 3,000 people avail of these services which range from resource centre activities to home support.
In attendance at the event were the people who use RehabCare’s services, their families and friends, as well as invited guests from Monaghan County Council, Seymour Crawford TD, and invited guests from the HSE, the VEC, RehabCare and business and voluntary representatives from the local community.
