Shauna Jones, from Kill, didn’t leave the house much and struggled with anxiety before coming to the National Learning Network in Naas. Shauna has now completed work experience, gained new confidence and is looking forward to getting a job.

Life was OK before I came to Naas National Learning Network (NLN), but I had no job. I did a couple of FAS courses such as Core Employability Skills, Make-Up and Hospitality and Tourism. I didn’t really leave my house that much, only when I had too because I was struggling with anxiety and I did not have any confidence in myself. I also stayed up late and woke up late in the day.  I was not very happy with my life, which was probably not a good way to feel.

I choose to come to NLN because I wanted to learn new things, make new friends and get some work experience to find a job. I also wanted to help build up my confidence and have a set routine, I didn’t want to be sitting at home all day doing nothing. I wanted to have something to do and also feel better about myself.

I have been doing the Transitions course for little over a year. It has different modules such as career preparation, personal skills, internet skills, and work experience.  We also go on trips outside the centre like visiting the Curragh Plains, Japanese Gardens and other places. I find the course enjoyable and I like what I am doing.

I have made new friends and I am also able do more independent travel to go shopping and visiting friends and family, which I would not have been able to do before starting this course. My confidence is way better than it was before, as I’ve completed work experience in GameStop and Marks and Spencer. I am glad I did this course because if I didn’t I would not have achieved this much.

My life has improved, I like getting up in the morning and coming in to the transition course. I am not as anxious as I was before and I also have more confidence in myself which I am happy about. I will be sad when I leave the course as I will be finishing up in October. An option that is open to me is to do the Level 5 Business and IT course with the National Learning Network. I want to get a job or maybe another course. I believe I will be able to achieve passing the Theory Test and hopefully find a job before I finish this course and hopefully learn to drive soon.

I am glad that I choose to come to the National Learning Network as It was a good decision – I have learned knew things, made new friends, got some work experience, done a cover letter and CV and I also have gotten a lot more confidence .
