Sligo Ride-out for RehabCare

The inaugural RehabCare fundraising ride-out The Trek, which took place in Union Wood on Saturday 3 September, was an outstanding success with over 40 riders taking part. The event was widely supported by Sligo’s equestrian community, with riders from different clubs coming together in support of RehabCare. Each rider who took part in The Trek raised money through sponsorship cards which will fund upcoming projects in the centre in Aughamore. These include the provision of accessible computer equipment in conjunction with Sligo VEC as well as the provision of a drama programme.

RehabCare operates a wide variety of responsive health and social care programmes which reach into communities the length and breadth of Ireland. Choice, quality and personalised services are the cornerstones of RehabCare, which prides itself on the flexibility of programmes in meeting the individual wishes and requirements of each client. In Sligo, RehabCare currently provides a range of services to more than 65 people from all around the county, including the resource centre in Aughamore Far for people with disabilities and those on the autistic spectrum, an outreach after-hours service for people with disabilities living in the community, and supported accommodation services in Sligo town.

Speaking after the event, Eamonn Wheeler, Community Services Manager, RehabCare, said, “We are delighted with the success of The Trek with over 40 riders of all ages, from six to 60 taking part. The weather was great, which made the ride-out even more enjoyable especially for the many spectators who joined in the fun. We really appreciate the fantastic support that we received from the equestrian communities here in Sligo and in neighbouring Leitrim and Mayo. I would also like to thank the many volunteers who gave up their time to help us on the day, local landowners for the use of their land and Coillte for facilitating the use of Union Wood. The monies raised will really benefit everyone who attends the centre.”

The riders set-off from the RehabCare resource centre in Aughamore Far and continued to Union Wood before returning via country lanes and woodland paths to the centre. Following the ride-out, the riders and spectators were treated to a well-earned BBQ hosted by those who attend the centre. It is hoped that The Trek, which was organised by Leah Mc Nulty, RehabCare, will become an annual event.
