Harps of Donegal CD launched at unique night of music and entertainment
The Harps of Donegal CD, a unique collection of songs by many of Donegal’s best- known artists and musicians was officially launched today (Tuesday 9 August 2011) at an evening of music and entertainment in Balor Theatre, Ballybofey, hosted by TV3’s Noel Cunningham. Local musicans Jacqui Sharkey, Seamus “the Boy from Donegal” McGee as well as Fergus Cleary and Hugh McClean, all performed at the launch which showcased the best of Donegal musical talent.
The CD, which includes songs by Daniel O’ Donnell, Altan, Goats Don’t Shave, Clannad, Mickey Harte and many more, is a joint fundraising initiative between Rehab and Finn Harp’s, Donegal’s only senior football club. Proceeds from the sale of the CD, which can be bought in local music outlets and online, will go to the RehabCare Resource Centre in Lifford, the National Learning Network training centre in Letterkenny and the Finn Harps Football in the Community programme
The new Finn Harps Anthem, – the album’s feature track – was released for the first time at the launch. The song, which received a great reaction, was produced by Terry McGinty of Valley Studios and is a cover of the famous Blue Glows number. Speaking at the launch, Rehab Fundraiser, Michael Carty, said “We are delighted to team up with Finn Harps FC to raise funds for local Rehab services here in Donegal. Almost 100 people use our RehabCare resource centre and supported accommodation in Lifford and attend courses at National Learning Network in Letterkenny. These Rehab services allow people to realise their dreams, learn skills, access job opportunities and live more independent lives.”
Speaking on the joint fundraising initiative, Joey O’ Leary, Chairman, Finn Harps FC said, “There is a natural synergy between sport and community welfare so we are delighted to form a fundraising partnership with Rehab. I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to each of the Donegal artists who donated tracks to the CD and also to Letterkenny Shopping Centre for its generous support.”
Brian McCracken, Manager of Letterkenny Shopping Centre, explained their involvement with the fundraising initiative, “We are delighted to be involved with Rehab and Finn Harps on the Harps of Donegal CD. It is a fantastic CD and I’m sure everyone will enjoy the unique and wonderful compilation of Irish artists. I’m sure the people of Donegal and further afield will show their support for these very worthy causes. We are very excited about another novel fundraising event which will take place here in September. We’ll be welcoming everyone to Letterkenny Shopping Centre to take part in the ‘Harp on for Rehab’ singing competition.”
