Rhian’s Top Hats and Tiaras Ball Raises £15,400 for Momentum

Tuesday September 14, 2010: Rhian Johns, who had to learn to eat, walk and speak again after a life-threatening brain haemorrhage, has raised more than £15,000 for Momentum, the charity she credits with her recovery.

Rhian, from Bieldside, Aberdeen organised the glittering Top Hats and Tiaras Ball, in aid of Momentum, after its Pathways programme in Aberdeen supported her to get her life back on track. The event, which took place on Saturday evening at Aberdeen’s Hilton Treetops Hotel, was attended by around 200 guests.

In 2006, Rhian was hospitalised for two and a half months due to a severe brain haemorrhage. When she awoke from a coma, she had lost many of her basic skills, such as being able to read and write.

However, with the support of Momentum’s Pathways programme, she returned to Robert Gordon University to undertake a degree in fashion management.

The Pathways programme provides specialist support to people with a brain injury who want to return to employment, further education or training. The programme assists people to manage the effects of their brain injury and offers training in memory skills, improving concentration, confidence-building and managing stress and anxiety.

With the support of Momentum staff, individuals are assisted to work towards achievable goals and support continues even once back in employment or training.

Rhian said: “Momentum played a huge part in my recovery and, as a thank you, I wanted to raise funds for the organisation so that it can continue its great work. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone for their amazing support and I hope to do more for Momentum in the future.”
