Quest Brain Injury Services to Host Information Roadshow

Each year, over 900 people from the Galway, Mayo and Roscommon area sustain a brain injury. To mark Brain Awareness Week 2007 (12–19 March), Quest Brain Injury Services, located in Liosban Business Park, will host a mobile exhibition as part of a roadshow that’s visiting communities in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

The roadshow will be at:

· 12 March, CostCutters, Tuam Shopping Centre

· 13 March, Eyre Square Shopping Centre, Galway

· 14 March, Hughes Supermarket, Claregalway

· 15 March, Dunnes Stores, Castlebar

· 16 March, Tesco, Roscommon

· 16 March, Galway Shopping Centre, Headford Road

Personnel from Quest, which is part of the National Learning Network, will be on hand to answer queries and provide information on the services offered at the centre and in local communities. Short talks will also be held on the causes and effects of brain injury.

An acquired brain injury includes any injury to the brain that occurs as a result of an accident, assault, tumour, stroke or a viral infection. Difficulties following a brain injury are varied, complex and unique to the individual.

‘People with a brain injury can suffer a wide range of effects, including loss of co-ordination, poor memory, difficulty in concentrating and poor planning and organisational skills,’ says Patrisha Greaney, Quest Co-ordinator. ‘The Roadshow will demonstrate how individualised training and the range of supports provided by Quest to clients and their families can help people to cope with the changes in their life, and build their capacity for independence and community integration with the potential to join the workforce or progress to further education/training.’

Funded by the HSE, Quest provides Vocational Rehabilitation training, Aftercare and Outreach services to clients in the Galway, Mayo and Roscommon region. It addresses such areas as brain injury awareness, cognitive rehabilitation (strategies to improve memory, attention and concentration), independent living skills, behaviour management, vocational skills, personal development, and information technology.
