Are You Looking for a ‘Sporting Chance’?

Are you looking for a Sporting Chance to build a career in the exciting sports and leisure industry?

Sporting Chance is a ground-breaking new training programme designed by National Learning Network, the training and education division of the Rehab Group, to enable people with disabilities and others who are marginalised to build careers as future coaches, leaders and managers in the sports and leisure industry.

Operating from National Learning Network’s centre in Tralee, this innovative programme is fully accredited by FETAC and has been specifically developed to assist participants in gaining employment in the sports and leisure industry, or progressing onto further training and education in this field.

“The Sporting Chance programme will recruit participants unable to avail of existing training opportunities, and will support them in becoming future coaches, leaders and managers in the sports and leisure industry,” said Pat O’Neill, Area Manager, National Learning Network Tralee.

Just 20 candidates from throughout Ireland are being sought for the training programme, which will be run in conjunction with the Institute of Technology Tralee, one of Ireland’s leading providers of education in the Health and Leisure field.

“The programme will ensure that trainees receive the maximum opportunity to develop their skills and apply their learning in the busy sports and leisure work industry,” said Mr O’Neill. “Ideal candidates will possess an aptitude in one, or a number of sports, enabling them to instruct at a coaching level. Motivation, dynamism and a passion for sport are a prerequisite.”

According to Mr O’Neill, the programme is not designed to develop extraordinary athletes, but instead to develop athletes with an extraordinary gift for encouraging others to participate in sports.

The Sporting Chance programme, which commences towards the end of August, will include modules on theory, First Aid and National Governing Body requirements, as well as work experience in clubs and leisure facilities. No course fees apply for the programme, which is fully funded by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform under the ‘Enhancing Disability Services Programme’, managed by Pobal. A training allowance is paid to successful candidates, plus an equipment budget for course requirements.
